A little about me: I was born in Washington D.C. and have lived in Philadelphia for over 40 years. I work in The Mill, a large Civil War clothing factory that once manufactured uniforms for the Union Army but has been converted into studios for 50 artists. I have a B.A. from the University of Chicago in History of Art and an M.A. from Harvard University in Fine Arts.
As you look through my work, you may be struck by the range of artists who have inspired and influenced me. From Matisse and the Lascaux cave paintings to Red Grooms and Sepik River sculpture– from Cezanne and Giotto to Utamaro and Manet– and from ancient Greek vase paintings and Picasso to Degas and Pre-Columbian Nayarit clay figures.
Whatever the subject matter– in my environment or from my mind– I enjoy the particular challenge of creating a series of works that revolve around the same subject, but vary in composition, line, color, perspective and media. Examples of works from a series is shown here: “Rain Forest Foliage.”
I am enticed by the possibilities in a blank sheet of paper, and cherish my freedom to create art that embodies my visual and emotional experience. The journey captivates me – the trials, errors, and variations along the way and how they integrate into the work, until it says to me, “Enough. I am complete.”
